It is competed in two categories in WRO Scandinavia, one regular class and one open class. One team can, in the national tournaments, compete in the Open category, Regular category or both categories. Note that in the international final in Gyeongbuk Pohang, South-Korea, a team can only compete in one of the categories.

A team can consist of maximum 3 team members in addition to one coach. All team members must be aged 16 to 18 years. In Regular category the teams compete in a robot challenge, as described in further details in the Regular category section .

In the Open category the teams shall build a demonstration robot and present a project concerning the theme "Artist Robot". An outlined description of the theme and rules are provided in the Open category section.
